LGU launches coastal and underwater clean-up, advances environmental protection advocacy
KAUSWAGAN, LANAO DEL NORTE — The local government unit (LGU) here launched its first multisector coastal and underwater clean-up activity on Saturday in Sitio Tangkig, barangay Tacub, participated by government offices, barangay fisherfolks, municipal employees and the private sector. The office of the mayor and the municipal environment and safety office led the activity. During the event, scuba divers from GNPower Kauswagan Ltd. Co. also pursued Scubasurero, an underwater clean-up drive aimed at cleaning up coral reefs, which was launched with the LGU in June. Since September 2019, the LGU organized a monthly coastal clean up with its employees. This time, a larger group from various sectors of the community have joined forces with the LGU. The LGU aims to strengthen the participation of stakeholders in the community to address the problem of ocean waste that has long been affecting marine life. Municipal Mayor Rommel Arnado led the kick-off activity. “We come here on a regular basis. At the same time, the LGU is finding ways to create more local laws to ensure our seas and the environment are protected,” said Arnado. Participating groups included the Philippine Army, Philippine National Police, Philippine Coast Guard, GNPower Kauswagan, municipal employees, and individual volunteers.
